Suffering from left oblique strain, right hander Cobb of Tampa Bay Rays is placed on the fifteen day disabled list.
The team announced it on Sunday, one day after Alex Cobb marked five in 7 innings in the 1-0 victory of Tampa Bay over Cincinnati Reds held at the Great American Ball Park. With fourteen strikeouts this season, he is 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA.
Cobb was replaced by Jeff Beliveau, another left handed from Triple-A Durham.
“I’m not exactly sure when it happened,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told reporters in Cincinnati, “we thought it could have been dehydration.”
The injury of Cobb further stresses the Ray’s rotation. He is the third starter of Tampa Bay to be placed in the DL succeeding right hander Jeremy Hellickson and the left hander Matt Moore. During his start on Saturday, he initially felt tightness, but it was not considered serious at that time.
Cobb got back to Florida for MRI after the game. It is anticipated that he migh
t miss some starts.
The left hander Erik Bedard is amongst the favorite to replace Alex Cobb as a starter. Bedard was in the competition for the 5th rotation place during the spring training that was finally awarded to the right hander Jake Odorizzi. Bedard chose Triple-A Durham to begin his season with.
