The man who was fined $525 for refilling an 89¢ drink at one of the Veterans Affairs hospital might just escape with a warning.
It was Christopher Lewis of North Charleston who did not pay after refilling his drink on Wednesday. He was given a ticket by the federal police officer. Lewis, who is a construction worker, said that he never found the signs and also that he refilled his drink many times before without paying.
Tonya C. Lobbestael, the VA spokesman, said that after reexamining what had occurred at the Ralph C. Johnson Center in Charleston, the officials had decided that a warning was enough.
Lobbestael also said that the drink machines of the cafeteria have visible signs that indicate the cost of each refill. If someone still avoids paying for the refills, it is considered straightforwardly as shoplifting.
