Steve Hollis, a citizen of Seattle, along with some of his colleagues, has been working for some years to build a home security system, ‘Korner’, that would be cheap, and within the reach of everyone. Hollis says, “We think the world kind of needs this idea. We definitely have an ambition to grow this into a real company.”
People usually prefer home security systems only if they can afford the equipment and its subscription fee. Keeping in view this fact, Korner has tried to give people a low cost option to feel secure and safe in his or her home, office or any other property. It has been crowdfunding its product on Indiegogo since April 22. The campaign was launched with the goal of raising USD 150,000 within the specified period, and surprisingly, it has already raised USD 390,252, with still a day to go. The company aims at competing with the popularity of Canary, which is also a complete home security system packed into a single device.
Korner is basically a product designed specifically for the protection of homes, that operates with the smartphone of the user, as it includes iOS and Android App. It is priced just under USD 100, so that anyone can afford it, without paying any annual fee. It has been designed for everyone; students, renters, homeowners searching an affordable security system, parents (who can purchase it for their children who are away, or for grandparents who are living alone), vacation home renters and as well as for travelling workers.
This system employs tags and a simple little sensor, just about 7mm thick, that can easily be installed within minutes. With the help of sensor, the users can communicate and monitor through a smartphone app. The sensor is powered by a battery, so it does not require any additional wires.
Another part of the system is a FOB powered by a standard USB charger, which needs to be plugged into a router port of a wireless network set at home. The tags are tuned in such a way that they can detect any type of vibration or a sound, for example, a knock at the door or a gust of wind that blows outside the house. The users just need to stick them to their doors and windows.
Moreover, its working is quite simple too. Once the installation procedure is complete, the system starts working. In case of any motion around the door or near the windows, an immediate alert is sent to the user on his smartphone. After the motion has been detected on the FOB, it notifies by producing a very loud alarm, and afterwards, triggers the smartphone application. The smartphone app, in turn alerts the user of the possible break in. It also gives the user an option to call the police and notify the neighbors, friends or family.
The app is also quite useful in the way that the it allows the users to set warnings that can be shared with multiple contact at a single time. This gives the users his own social network of rescue. Furthermore, using the application, the users can also arm or disarm the alarm irrespective of their location. The users can set a time of their own choice to activate or deactivate Korner , and the system manages it accordingly. Korner comes along with a three year long battery life.
The team of Korner says that the product will be released by December this year. Moreover, complete home packages are also available starting at just 149 bucks. As soon as the campaign on Indiegogo concludes, the production of this fast and inexpensive home security system will start.
