(BRAZIL) – On Wednesday, four matches were played in the FIFA World Cup. The first game was played between Nigeria and Argentina. Both teams had already qualified for the next round. Lionel Messi scored two goals for Argentina. Just in the 3rd minute of the match, he scored a goal giving his team a lead of 1-0. However, in the next minute, Ahmed Musa of Nigeria leveled the scores. Just before the end of the first half, he scored another goal that dragged the lead to 2-1. Nigeria came back strong and scored a goal just after the first half, that once again leveled the scores 2-2. However, in the 50th minute, Marcos Rojo of Argentina scored a goal, after which the Nigerian team could not come back. Argentina won the match 3-2.
The second game was played between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran. It wasn’t an decider game, as both teams had already been eliminated from the tournament. Bosnia had lost its opening two games of the World Cup and therefore, needed a come back. It played well against Iran and won the match 3-1.
The third was a Group E game played between Switzerland and Honduras. It was an important game for Switzerland, but not much important for Honduras, as it had already lost its first two games in the tournament. However, a defeat here could have worsen the things for Switzerland. From this group, France had qualified for the next round, However, there could possibly have been a tie between the remaining three teams. Switzerland played extremely well and won the match 3-0.
Xherdan Shaqiri scored all the three goals for Switzerland. The fourth game was played between France and Ecuador. Ecuador had neither won a match in the tournament, nor any of its game ended in a draw. So, there were no chances of Ecuador to qualify for the next round. Its opponent, on the other hand, was unbeaten so far in the tournament. However, Ecuador played well in the match, and did not allow France to score a goal. The match ended in a draw 0-0.
On Thursday, the last four of the group matches were played. The first game was played between Portugal and Ghana. It was an extremely important game for both the teams if they were to qualify for the next stage. Portugal needed a convincing win over Ghana, otherwise there were very less chances that it would qualify. On the other hand, a win over here could have pushed Ghana into the next stage. Portugal won the match 2-1 but could not win it with a convincing lead. As a result, it could not qualify for the next round. On the other hand, after this defeat, Ghana stood fourth in the points table and therefore, got eliminated.
The second game was played between Germany and USA. Germany was leading the points table already and had qualified for the next round. USA needed to win the game in order to ensure their presence in the next round. It was a close game and Germany finally won the match 1-0. However, despite losing the game, USA managed to qualify for the next round, as Portugal could not manage a convincing victory.
The third game of the day was played between Korea Republic and Belgium. Belgium had already won its first two games, and had qualified for the next round. On the other hand, Korea Republic did not manage even a single win. Belgium won its third game 1-0. Korea Republic stood fourth in the points table and was eliminated.
The last game played yesterday was between Algeria and Russia. It was expected to be a thriller, as the winner was to qualify for the next round. So, the match gained importance of a quarter final. Russia started extremely well and scored a goal just in the 6th minute of the game, and led the scores till the first half 1-0. However, in the second half, the scores were leveled by Algeria’s Islam Slimani. No team could score a goal after his leveler, and the match ultimately ended in a draw 1-1. Algeria qualified, as it had already won a match, while Russia was eliminated, as its first two games were drawn.
Meanwhile, FIFA has banned Luis Suarez for four months. Moreover, he will not be playing in the coming nine games. On Tuesday, Uruguay’s striker bite Italy’s defender Giorgio Chieellini after which fans demanded a serious action against Suarez.
Also, Fabio Capello, the manager of the Russian team has put strong allegations, saying that every time Russia plays against a team, the referees are against it. He said this after the match between Russia and Algeria ended in a draw. He also claimed that the Russian goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev was blinded by a laser during the equalizer by Algeria.
As of now, the group matches stage has ended, and the sixteen teams have been qualified for the next round, Round of 16, which starts on June 28. Eight matches will be played between these sixteen finalized teams, after which, eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals.
