(BRAZIL) – On Monday, two matches were played in the pre-quarterfinal stage of FIFA World Cup. The first game was played between France and Nigeria. France was a better team, both in terms of its previous performance, and in terms of its abilities. France also has some of the most recognized players in the side which are capable of changing the scenario of the match with their aggressive approach. On the other hand, Nigeria, who had managed just a single win in its three last matches of the World Cup, had to play extremely well to surprise France. However, Nigeria played with good efforts and did not allow France to get control of the game right from the beginning. The match was tied till the end of the first half. In the 79th minute of the second half, Paul Pogba scored a goal for the French team. Nigeria then tried to pull things back, but couldn’t. Even Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa, who was the leading goal scorer for his side, couldn’t do anything. Things became even worse for the Nigerian team when Joseph Yobo scored an own goal that gave France a lead of 2-0. France therefore won the match 2-0 and qualified for the quarterfinals.
The second game was played between Germany and Algeria. Germany had played well throughout the World Cup, and had secured two wins out of its three plays. However, Algeria’s performance wasn’t up to the mark, as it only managed a single win in the matches of the tournament. It was expected that it would turn out to be an easy game for Germany, as it was up against a small side. However, Algeria fought hard and did not allow Germany to put the ball in their net, even a single time. As a result, the match ended in a draw. A 30-minute extra time was given, in which both teams looked different. Germany scored a goal just at the start of the extra time. Algeria tried well but couldn’t score a goal. In the 120th minute of the game, Germany scored another goal, that confirmed their victory. Algeria also reacted smartly and scored its first goal. However, when the extra time ended, Algeria lost the match to Germany, 1-2. Hence, Germany qualified for the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Uruguay’s striker Luis Suarez has apologized Giorgio Chiellini for biting him at the shoulder. He, however, claimed that it wasn’t intentional, rather, it was the result of a collision. Also, Arjen Robben, who plays as a forward for Netherlands was found diving intentionally in order to get a penalty kick in his teams favor in the game played against Mexico yesterday. However, FIFA will not open any disciplinary proceedings against him.
Today, two games will be played in the round of 16, knockout stage. The first game will be played between Argentina and Switzerland at 13:00 local time.

Argentina has performed exceptionally well so far in the World Cup, as it has won all of its games. It has beaten Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria in the first stage of the tournament. Its star player Lionel Messi has scored four goals in the tournament so far, and appears to be a major challenge for Switzerland. On the other side, Switzerland has won two of its three games of the tournament. It lost its one game against France. Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri scored all the three goals in the game against Honduras, and is the leading goal scorer for his side.

Belgium remained unbeaten in the first stage of the World Cup. It won its games against Algeria, Russia and South Korea. Belgium has some of the very finest players on their side, including their captain Vincent Kompany, and other remarkable players such as Marouane Fellaini and Eden Hazard. On the other side, USA won just a single game of its three played, lost one, while one game ended in a draw. USA hopes would be with Clint Dempsey, who is so far the leading goal scorer for them, with two goals.
