(BRAZIL) – On Tuesday, two games were played in the pre-quarterfinal stage of FIFA World Cup. The first game was played between Argentina and Switzerland. The football fans yesterday saw a much close game than what they had expected. Argentina was one of the unbeaten teams of the tournament. So, it was expected that it would turn out to be an easy game for Argentina. However, its opponent, Switzerland had also played extremely well in the games against Ecuador and Honduras. As the match started, both teams looked prepared as right from the beginning, they started attacking each other’s goals. However, no goal was scored in the first half, and the teams went 0-0. In the second half, Argentina came out with an aggressive approach and attacked the goal of Switzerland many times, but could not succeed in scoring a goal. On the other hand, Switzerland also missed some definite chances and could not put the ball in the nets. As a result, no goal was scored in the second half. Just before the end of the 30-minute extra time, Argentina’s Angel di Maria scored a goal that gave his team a lead of 1-0.
Switzerland had to react immediately in order to level the scores, however, it couldn’t. Argentina won the match 1-0, and qualified for the quarterfinals where it will meet Belgium.
The second game was played between Belgium and USA. Belgium had reached the knockout stage unbeaten. On the other hand, USA just managed a single win in the first stage of the tournament. Much like the previous game, this game did not prove to be an easy game for Belgium. USA’s strong defenses did not allow Belgium to dominate the game.
No team could score a goal in the first half. The condition prevailed in the second half too, and no team could turn their chances into a goal. Eventually, the match was tied by the end of the second half. However, just at the start of the extra time, Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne finally scored a goal and gave his team a lead of 1-0. Soon after the first goal, Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku scored another goal that pushed their lead to 2-0.
USA reacted immediately and scored its first goal in the 17th minute of the extra time.
However, it wasn’t enough for a victory, and USA had to score at least a goal to level the scores, which it couldn’t. As a result, Belgium won the game 2-1, and qualified for the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Cameroon is investigating the claim that seven of their players were involved in match fixing at the World Cup in Brazil. These allegations have been made by a Singapore’s match fixer in a German news magazine, Der Spiegel. However, FIFA stays silent on this issue and did not confirm or deny that it was investigating the case.
The quarterfinal stage starts on Friday, July 4. The eight teams which have qualified for the quarterfinals include France, Germany, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Netherlands. France will face Germany, while Brazil will meet Colombia on Friday. Furthermore, Argentina will play against Belgium, and Netherlands will be up against Costa Rica in the fourth quarterfinal on Saturday.
