(BRAZIL) – On Friday, the quarterfinal stage of the FIFA World Cup went underway. Two quarterfinals were played between the four qualifying teams. The first match was a big one, played between France and Germany. Both teams were equally good as far as their previous performances were concerned. However, the football lovers didn’t witness as much an exciting game as they had expected. Despite lots of efforts, it eventually turned out to be a low scoring game. Germany’s Mats Hummels scored a goal for his side just in the 13th minute, and established their lead over France very early in the game.
France had plenty of time then to react back and level the scores. However, despite the presence of some of the most recognized players like Paul Pogba and Karim Benzema, France could not manage to score a single goal in either of the halves. Just couple of minutes before the end of the play, Karim Benzema got an excellent opportunity to score a goal, however, the German goal keeper made a splendid save. Soon after that, the final whistle was sounded, and France faced a defeat 1-0. Germany hence qualified for the semifinals now for the fourth time in a row. Mats Hummels was declared the man of the match.
Yesterday’s second game was a bit more interesting one than the previous game. Brazil was up against the unbeaten team of the tournament, Colombia. Brazil fans just wanted to see their players celebrating after the match. They expected a good game between the two teams. Brazil played for their glory and put their best efforts in the game against a better side. Just in the 7th minute of the game, Brazil’s Thiago Silva scored a goal to give his team a lead of 1-0 in the first half.
Colombian team missed some opportunities and so could not level the scores in the first half. In the 69th minute, Brazil’s David Luiz scored another goal for his team that pushed the lead to 2-0. In the 80th minute, Colombia’s star of the tournament, James Rodriguez scored a goal on a penalty kick, making the scores 2-1.
Colombia had to score at least another goal in order to stay in the game. However, Brazil strengthened its defense and did not allow Colombia to score a goal. Brazil won the game 2-1 and qualified for the semifinals, where it will meet Germany on Tuesday.
Yesterday, Brazil paid a heavy price for their win against Colombia in the quarterfinal, as their star player Neymar, who had already not recovered from his knee injury, suffered a fractured vertebra. Hence, he will not play in the rest of the games.
