(BRAZIL) – On Wednesday, the second semi final was played between Netherlands and Argentina. Both teams were so far unbeaten in the tournament. Also, because of the fact that the football fans just saw an extremely high scoring game between Germany and Brazil, it was expected that this game would also grab the attention of the football lovers. Although both teams were evenly matched, yet, Netherlands’s track record against Argentina was encouraging for the Dutch team. It had won four of the eight games which it played against Argentina, while Argentina had only won one. The Dutch fans were expecting their team to win this game too, and would had further magnify its lead over Argentina. However, it could not happen for them just when it was required.
As the game commenced, the players looked determined, and the attack was on right from the beginning. The teams strived hard so as to gain a lead over their opponent as early as possible. However, despite the presence of some class players, no team could score a goal, and both went 0-0 in the first half. The interest of the football fans intensified in the second half, as both teams looked desperate for a goal. Even though, they got some very fine opportunities, but the players missed their targets and could not score a single goal. The match was drawn in the second half too, 0-0. A 30 minute extra time was given, however, it also did not prove sufficient, and the scores were once again leveled. The excitement in the stadium had reached its maximum, as the teams prepared themselves for a penalty shootout. It was a do or die stage for both the teams. However, Sergio Romero, the goalkeeper of Argentina saved two goals for his side, and limited the scores of Netherlands to just 2.
On the other hand, Argentina did not miss the target even a single time, and scored goals in all of its four penalties.
As a result, Argentina won the game 4-2, and qualified for the final, where it will face Germany on Sunday.
On the other hand, the two loosing teams of the semifinals, Brazil and Netherlands will play against each other on Saturday for a third position.
Meanwhile, Louis Vaan Gaal, the head coach of Netherlands, expressed his feelings of anger over FIFA for refusing his proposal of discarding the third position play off to be played between Netherlands and Brazil. He demanded that the controversial playoff should be confined to history.
