After the closing ceremony, the teams entered the ground and received a loud cheer from the crowd. Along with support, the expectations from both teams were also high. In 1986, the two teams faced each other in the final of the Fifa World Cup, and Argentina won that game. In 1990, Germany was once again up against Argentina, and won. Now, after 24 years, again Germany was in finals against Argentina and has won the title.
The game gathered the interest of spectators right from the beginning, as players started their attempts at the goal. Some very close moments were seen in the match, where both teams had a chance to score their goal. The Germans’ possession of the ball remained much greater as compared to that of Argentina’s throughout the game. In the first half, Argentina got a golden chance to score a goal, when its forward, Gonzalo Higuain, just needed to beat the goalkeeper to score his team’s first goal, but he couldn’t.
A few minutes after this, Argentina scored a goal, however, the referee called an offside. Germany also kept on attacking the goal of its opponent, however, it also missed its targets, and could not score a goal. The scores remained 0-0 in the first half. In the second half, Argentina looked a bit more aggressive and made some fine attempts at the goal, but none of them proved successful. On the other hand, Germany was also struggling to score a goal, because of a powerful defense of Argentina. The scores remained 0-0 at the end of the second half too. It looked that the game might finish in a penalty shoot out. 30 minutes of extra time was given. Just seven minutes before the end of the play, Germany’s Mario Gotze scored a goal for his side and gave his team a lead of 1-0 just at the right time.
Argentina needed to react back immediately, in order to stay in the game. However, Lionel Messi, even one of their star players, couldn’t do anything for his team. Clearly it looks as if their was a lack of team work on Argentinian side. The match ended in a 1-0 win for Germany. It is to be noted, that Germany has won this title now for the fourth time.
The celebrations begun in the stadium, and all across the world where the German fans had gathered to support their team, with the final whistle of the referee that confirmed their victory. The German team kept on celebrating in the ground with their coach, for quite a while.
After the game, the award giving ceremony was held in which the performances of some of the finest players of the tournament were acknowledged. Argentina’s Lionel Messi was given the Golden Ball award, while Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper of Germany got the Golden Glove award.
Moreover, Colombia’s James Rodriguez received the Golden Boot award, as he scored the most goals in the tournament. France’s Paul Pogba was given the Young Player award.
Earlier, on Saturday, Brazil and Netherlands were up against each other for a third position playoff in the tournament. Brazil had a good chance to satisfy their disappointed fans, and restore their form. However, Brazil could not make their performance count on the day, and Netherlands won the game comprehensively 3-0.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, police launched tear gas and stun grenades to disperse some of the anti World Cup protesters who tried to march towards the Maracana Stadium, just when the final game was about to start between Argentina and Germany.
