(LIMA) – On Friday, the First Inter-American Meeting of Presidents of Legislative Powers took place in Lima, Peru. Jose Miguel Insulza, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), and Fredy Otarola Penaranda, the President of Peru’s Congress participated in the inauguration event, and also made the opening speeches. Moreover, some of the former presidents, ministers and parliamentarians from Spain and Latin America also participated.
The meeting provided a room for dialogue and exchange and focused on increasing inter parliamentary collaboration and strengthening capacity to fortify the associations between the different Congresses of the area.
Furthermore, the meeting also focused on establishing a mutual agenda that adds to the institutional modernization and strengthening the legislatures of America, in order to help in exchanging information and best patterns.
The OAS will be providing technical as well as specialized support to the parliamentary assembly of countries of Inter-American System, via its Section in Support of Representative Institutions (SAIR), which belongs to the Secretariat for Political Affairs.
The participants of the meeting discussed issues like, “getting closer to citizens, the generation of credibility and and trust toward legislatures”. Some other issues discussed at the event included, “Parliament as a key actor in collaborative dialogue for sustainable economic development, climate change and social inclusion.” Moreover, “women’s political participation: achievements and challenges in parliamentary representation” was also discussed.
